Often informed by the natural occurrence of light in nature and its flora, artist Melissa Reischman uses the principles of light and dark to explore psychological and existential states of being. Her work’s media spans from charcoal to oil paint, on paper, panels, and canvas. With these materials, Reischman creates two-dimensional images that are high in contrast and produce a depiction of nature and its elements that blurs the lines between representation and abstraction.
Inspired by her encounters with the natural world, Reischman’s compositions serve as visual metaphors for the transitions that occur when drifting through various emotional states. She utilizes methods of application and erasure in order to create drawings that allude to natural elements, landscapes, and still life. The effects of sharp and soft focus, along with extreme lights and darks create a swirling, luminous quality that is present in the works that make up Sensory Perceptions. sensory perceptionsMOAH: Cedar
